PACIFIC GLORY

Anthony Saunders' stunning painting graphically recalls a moment during the Allied fight-back. On 5 October 1943, ten months after the island had fallen to the Japanese, American naval aircraft raided Wake, one of many such operations carried out by the US Navy and Marines. At the forefront of the attack was Lt. Cmdr. Edward 'Butch' O'Hare, the US Navy's first Ace and first Naval recipient of the Medal of Honor. Throwing his F6F Hellcat into a furious dogfight, he engages Japanese Mitsubishi A6M Zeroes based on the island and in the process adds two more victories to his tally. Under O'Hare's experienced guidance his young wingman, Lt. Alex Vraciu, claimed his first kill, and would later become one of the foremost Aces in the US Navy with 19 victories.

PATHWAY TO THE RUHR

With silver moonlight glinting on the wave tops below, Guy Gibson leads the first wave of Lancaster's low across the North Sea to avoid enemy detection, on the night of 16/17 May 1943. In formation with 'Mick' Martin on his port side and 'Hoppy' Hopgood to starboard, Gibson heads towards the Dutch Coast and the Ruhr valley beyond - their mission, the destruction of the Mőhne and Eder Dams.

PEACEFUL ANCHORAGE

PEGASUS BRIDGE - AIRBORNE STORM

Let by Major John Howard, men of the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry storm their way across Pegasus Bridge, just after midnight on the morning of 6 June 1944.

PEGASUS DAWN

Simon Smith's masterful piece Pegasus Dawn portrays the scene a few days later at the Bénouville Bridge, later renamed 'Pegasus' after the British 6th Airborne's flying horse emblem. Now reinforced by other units, including commandos, the British are in full control of the area, allowing free movement over the canal and river. Overhead Mk.IX Spitfires from 340 (Free French) Squadron RAF, part of 145 Wing, Second Tactical Air Force, provide fighter cover across the area.
