The scene is set at Upottery airfield in
Devon as men of the U.S. 101st Airborne
Division's famous 506th Parachute Infantry
Regiment begin to assemble alongside the C-
47s of the 439th Troop Carrier Group that
will carry them to Normandy as part of
Operation Albany - the seizure of the
causeways leading to Utah beach before
securing the area closest to Omaha beach.

DEVASTATING STRIKE
Mosquito Mk.VIs from 143 Squadron, part of the famous Banff Strike Wing, come under intense defensive fire whilst delivering a blistering strike on a pair of large enemy ships off the Norwegian coast in early 1945. Their salvo of rockets, however, will likely be enough to penetrate the ships' hulls.

DEVOTION TO DUTY
A Lancaster from 61 Sqn, heavily damaged by German night-fighter attacks, heads to Dusseldorf during a bombing mission on the night of 3 November 1943. Although badly wounded, pilot Bill Reid and his crew pressed on to bomb their target before returning home. For his courage and devotion to duty Reid was awarded the Victoria Cross.

By any military standards, it was difficult to imagine the Supreme Commander of the largest air force of the time, piloting himself over the battlefront during the opening hours of one of history's greatest military operations. But Jimmy Doolittle was no ordinary commander.

DOUBLE STRIKE
Robert Taylor's powerful and dramatic painting depicts one such strike that took place in the final stages of the Yom Kippur War, on 14 October 1973, when Israeli F-4 Phantom fighter-bombers made simultaneous strikes against the Egyptian air bases at Mansoura and Tanta north of Cairo.

Flying his Me110 night-fighter among the flak and searchlights, Kommandeur of IV. /NJG1 and top-scoring Luftwaffe night-fighter pilot, Major Heinz-Wolfgang Schnaufer, makes a daring attack on Lancasters of 106 Squadron high over the target area during a raid on German installations in August 1944.
